Now I canвЂ™t imagine all the little people who have seen this and how this one movie basically shaped the course of their entire lives in insidious ways they now canвЂ™t escapeвЂ¦ Amid the pastel rooms and the pauper wearing a petticoat, I am convinced I havenвЂ™t glimpsed anything darker since Lars von TrierвЂ™s Antichrist, which I saw for the first time last week.

Gorman makes it known that The Princess and the Pauper unflinchingly parallels the torments of an arranged marriage and being an unwaged servant. Just typing that makes me queasy in a way I have never felt before, and honestly, I sincerely intuit that thereвЂ™s a morsel of art in that sequence of events. Another thing that Gorman highlights-and he does attempt to explain the whole thing-is how the princess Barbie escaped her captors by fashioning a blanket ghost to entrap them. Everyone looks like lowkey toxic plasticine, but as Gorman says, dwell on that at your own risk. What I am surprised to learn, among several other things, is just how gnarly the animation quality is. Not surprisingly, because IвЂ™m well aware of the вЂњIвЂ™m just like youвЂ¦ YouвЂ™re just like me!вЂќ song bit from the mainstream memes circuit. At some point I think we mentioned something about kidвЂ™s cartoons and not-so-kiddy subject matter like poverty, for example, when I thought this was it: The exact moment one could actually mention the Barbie movie The Princess and the Pauper purely within range of reasonable context.ДЇrom the Gorman review I learned that: Among the Barbie movies The Princess and the Pauper is quite popular. You might think that certain things are simply useless in life, but let me tell you that only yesterday, the subject of Disney princesses came up in a conversation with a dear friend. I would strongly suggest this video for children who love fairy tales, musical stories, stories with active animal companions, or just anything Barbie.I will never watch a Barbie movie, so a 16-minute review from Seamus Gorman is probably more than enough to clue me in on that matter, for the culture. The story stands on its own and does not need Barbie to pull it off, even tho she is the character used to sell it. And, at the end, there are 'cut' rehearsal scenes to remind the children that these are ALL actors playing a part, and this is not their real nature. The horse is 'owned' by the bad guys, but turns tale and works for the 'good' guys. The poodle, alas for lovers of that breed, is a pampered 'hit man' in the story. One note of interest, this is a 'cat lovers' movie as the companion cats are good guys, the male 'woofie' being one of those cats that acts more like a dog, while the female cat is the pampered pet. It is not too scary for little ones, since it is a 'realistic' fairytale, and not one with witches, magic, o r monsters. The good guys are decent characters who treat each other with respect and villains are despicable. The colors are bright, with the still early 3-d animation improved over the earlier Nutcracker and Rapunzel Barbie movies. The story is sound, the music is decent/delightful depending on your tastes, and children are entranced with the colors and music.

(Yes, you can wear out a dvd.) The packaging that includes the bonus 25 minute soundtrack cd is probably the best deal, or a 'second hand' package where a kindly seller sells the interactive cat along with the movie/cdd combination. We have purchased several copies of this title as the grandchildren literally wear it out playing it.

Read full reviewДЄ great story even without the Barbie Name And, *spoiler alert!* - everyone does live happily ever after (after, of course, the bad guy gets his comeuppance). The songs help to highlight the action, rather than being plunked into the middle of it, as sometimes can be the case. The music is not half bad either, considering it's a made-for-video movie. And when in peril, the men, women and animals all work together to get out of trouble, so it's not just the men riding in to save the day. The movie shows that both the princess and the pauper (the poor girl) have aspects of their life that they would like to change, but that they recognize their responsibilities go beyond personal desires. But in spite of my initial reluctance, this movie has grown on my over the many (gazillions?) of times I have seen it with my 5-year-old daughter.

You wouldn't expect a Barbie Princess movie to be a paragon of female empowerment, and indeed, 'Princess & the Pauper' has its share of princess movie cliches. What's not to like? (Did I just write that?)
